LANCELOT AND GUENEVEBE, 135 fell into a trap that Sir Meliagraunce had laidfor him on the day fixed for the combat, and if alady who loved him well had not chanced tohear him, and freed him from his imprisonment,he would not have been on the field to meet hisfoe. Just in time Sir Lancelot dashed up, mountedupon his white horse, and explained to the Kingthe trick by which Sir Meliagraunce had hopedto make his appearance in the lists impossible. LANCELOT AND GUENEVEEE Part II When the King and Queen and all the lordsheard Sir Lancelots tale, their hearts stirredwithin them with anger, and the Queen took herseat by the Kings side to watch the combat. The two Knights then prepared themselvesfor battle, and putting their spears in rest, cametogether with a noise like thunder, and SirLancelot bore Sir Meliagraunce right over hishorse. Then Sir Lancelot jumped down, andthey fought on foot, till in the end Sir Melia-graunce was smitten to the ground by a blowon the head from his enemy. 136 LA
