Fair use for Three Laws of Robotics

This image is a reduced-resolution still frame from the 1999 movie Bicentennial Man, which was based upon science-fiction stories by Isaac Asimov and, secondarily, Robert Silverberg. Although the film received a mixed critical reception, it is notable for being one of the most faithful cinema adaptations made from Asimov's work. In the scene depicted here, the android NDR-114 has just arrived at the Martin household, and "Andrew" is using his built-in holographic projector to explain the Three Laws, the fundamental rules encoded in his positronic brain to control his behavior.

No free or public-domain images from this film have been located, and since any complete treatment of the Three Laws should address their use in film, an illustration of the scene which sets them forth is entirely germane. The presence of this image—processed as it has been—in the Three Laws article does not materially affect the copyright holders' ability to profit from the original work.
